We become like that which we love. If we love …

We become like that which we love. If we love what is base, we become base; but if we love what is noble, we become noble. // Blessed Fulton J. Sheen // there is something truly heroic to living an authentic life and vocation that does not conform to society, but instead conforms society to God // heroism can be found in the most simple places – we just have to be willing to be find little comfort in this life

Roma Day 16: today’s highlight hands down was spending the evening with Cardinal Raymond Leo Burke who joined us for dinner, a great discussion capped off with a Rosary. I am always amazed at how gracious and generous he is. He has been unfairly characterized by some, so please pray for him and the important ministry he does for the Church. Besides classes, we also went to a number of beautiful churches and found a film crew on our roof when we got home. Just another amazing day here in the Eternal City.

“In dangers, in doubts, in difficulties,…

“In dangers, in doubts, in difficulties, think of Mary, call upon Mary. Let not her name depart from your lips, never suffer it to leave your heart. And that you may obtain the assistance of her prayer, neglect not to walk in her footsteps. With her for guide, you shall never go astray; while invoking her, you shall never lose heart; so long as she is in your mind, you are safe from deception; while she holds your hand, you cannot fall; under her protection you have nothing to fear; if she walks before you, you shall not grow weary; if she shows you favor, you shall reach the goal.” -Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, Father and Doctor of the Church

Today, the feast of Our Lady of Sorrows commemorates the seven great sorrows which Mary lived in relation to Her Son, as they are recorded in the Gospels or through Tradition. Today we are invited to reflect on Mary’s deep suffering:

1. At the prophecy of Simeon: “You yourself shall be pierced with a sword – so that the thoughts of many hearts may be laid bare.” (Luke 2:35).
2. At the flight into Egypt; “Get up, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt.” (Mt 2:13).
3. Having lost the Holy Child at Jerusalem; “You see that your father and I have been searching for you in sorrow.” (Luke 2:48).
4. Meeting Jesus on his way to Calvary;
5. Standing at the foot of the Cross; “Near the cross of Jesus there stood His mother.” (John 19:25).
6. Jesus being taken from the Cross;
7. At the burial of Christ.

Our Lady of Sorrows, pray for us! #Catholic #faith #prayer #Mary

Today, August 5, marks the Feast of the Dedication of the Basilica of Saint Mary Major, known in older versions of the Roman liturgical calendar as the Feast of the Dedication of the Basilica of Saint Mary of the Snows, or simply as Our Lady of the Snows.
The name came from the ancient legend that during the pontificate of Liberius in the mid-300s, a Roman patrician named John and his wife had no heirs. As a result, they vowed to give all their possessions to the Virgin Mary, and prayed that she would show them how to dispense of their treasures. Then, on the night of Aug. 5, 358, in the middle of the hot Roman summer, snow fell on the summit of the city’s Esquiline hill. In obedience to a vision of Mary the couple had that night, they built a basilica in the same spot that the snow fell.
In honor of the special day, a shower of white flowers is dropped from the ceiling of the Basilica, now known as Saint Mary Major, to commemorate the “Miracle of the Snow” in 358.
